To send a proposal, open a project from Find work and choose Write a proposal. Choose whether you bid as yourself or your agency, set your price and delivery time (and milestones for fixed-price projects), write a cover letter, answer the client's questions, check the credit cost and choose Send proposal. The client is told right away.
Before you start
- A verified phone and an approved ID check. See ID check.
- Enough credits. The project page shows the cost. See credits.
- Read the whole project, including files and questions.
Steps
1Open the project and choose Write a proposal
From Find work, open the project and choose Write a proposal. You see the Send a proposal page, with the project summary on the side.
2Choose who's bidding
Under Bid as, choose Myself or Agency. Only an agency owner or manager can bid as the agency, and you'll name the member who will deliver.
3Set your terms
The Client budget is shown for reference. Then, depending on the project type:
- Fixed price: enter your Total amount and Delivery time (at least 2 days).
- Hourly: enter your Hourly rate and Hours per week, within the client's weekly limit.
- Remote monthly: enter your Monthly amount and hours per week.
All amounts are in the project's currency.
4Add milestones (fixed price)
Under Milestones, describe What you'll deliver for each step (at least 10 characters) and its Amount. Choose Add milestone for more, up to 6. You'll see "Milestones total … which equals your bid" when it adds up.
5Write your cover letter
In Cover letter (100 to 2000 characters), show you understood the need: repeat the goal in your own words, say how you'll do it, mention similar work in your portfolio and ask one smart question.
6Answer the client's questions
Under Answers, reply to every question, especially those marked required.
7Seal or boost (optional)
- Seal this proposal so other freelancers can't see your bid amount (extra credits). See sealed proposals.
- Boost to show near the top for 10 extra credits.
8Check the cost and send
Check This proposal costs and You have. If you're short, choose Get credits. Then choose Send proposal.
What happens next
Your proposal shows in My proposals with the status Sent. It changes to Viewed, Shortlisted, Messaged or Offer received as the client acts. If you're hired, the client sends an offer and funds the first milestone; you accept to start the contract. Otherwise you'll see Not selected when the client hires someone else or closes the project.
Troubleshooting
- "You've already sent a proposal for this project." You can have one active proposal per project; edit it instead. See edit or withdraw a proposal.
- "Milestones total … but your bid is …" Adjust amounts until they equal your bid.
- Not enough credits. Choose Get credits to buy a pack or earn free credits.
- "This is your own project." You can't bid on your own, your company's or your agency's projects.
- Text disappeared from my letter. Phone numbers, emails and outside links are removed automatically.
Good to know
- AI help: the proposal assistant can draft, suggest milestones, shorten your letter and check it answers the need. It's labelled AI; always edit it to sound like you.
- Invited? You'll see "You were invited, so this proposal is free" and choose Send a free proposal.
- Quality beats quantity. A few careful proposals to well-matched projects win more than many copied ones.
Tip: Start your letter with the client's problem, not your biography. The first two lines show in the client's list.
Important: Never agree to move the conversation or payment outside Belancer. Only work paid through Belancer is protected by Payment Secured.
Questions and answers
How many credits does a proposal cost?
The project page shows the exact cost before you write. A standard proposal costs 2 credits. Proposals to projects you were invited to are free.
Do I get my credits back if I'm not hired?
No, credits pay for sending the proposal. They come back only in special cases, such as when Belancer removes the project or the client closes it very soon after posting without hiring.
How long should my cover letter be?
Between 100 and 2000 characters. Short, specific letters that answer the client's need work best.
Why must my milestones add up to my bid?
The milestones are how you'll be paid. Their total must equal your bid so the client knows exactly what each step costs.
Can I include my phone number or portfolio link?
Contact details and outside links are removed from proposals. Show your work through your Belancer profile and portfolio instead.
What does boosting a proposal do?
For 10 extra credits your proposal shows near the top of the client's list, labelled Promoted. Only a few spots are available per project.
