When you pay on Belancer, your money is held as Payment Secured, not given to the freelancer. That's what makes refunds possible. If a gig order is late, if you and the freelancer agree to cancel, or if Belancer decides a reported problem in your favour, the money comes back to you. Refunds go to your Belancer Balance by default, straight away, in the same currency you paid.
Before you start
- A refund is only possible while the money is still held, or during the freelancer's Pending period through a report.
- Keep all messages and files in the order or contract. They're your evidence.
Steps
1Pick the right route
- Late gig order: if the freelancer misses the delivery date, you can cancel straight away for a full refund ("Late or never delivered? Cancel for a full refund.").
- Both agree: ask to cancel inside the order; when the freelancer accepts, the refund happens. See cancel an order.
- Disagreement: choose Report a problem and ask for a full or partial refund. See report a problem.
- Projects: unfunded milestones cost nothing. A funded milestone is refunded when you end the contract by agreement or by a Belancer decision.
2Choose where the money goes
By default the refund goes to your Belancer Balance. If you'd rather have it on your original method (bKash, Nagad, Rocket, card, PayPal), say so when you cancel or report, or ask support.
3Check your Balance or method
- Balance: the refund appears right away under Transactions as Refunds.
- Original method: it can take several working days for your bank, wallet or PayPal to show it.
4Check your invoice
The invoice shows Credit notes (refunds) and Paid after refunds, with the status Partly refunded or Refunded.
What happens next
You get an email for every refund. If it's a partial refund, the rest goes to the freelancer as decided. A refunded order can't be reviewed if it was cancelled before delivery.
Troubleshooting
- The refund isn't on my card yet. Card and wallet refunds depend on the provider. Check again after a few working days, then contact support with the refund reference.
- I can't find "Cancel" on my order. Cancelling is only open in some states (for example when the order is late). Otherwise use Report a problem.
- The money says "On hold". A case is open on that item; nothing moves until it's decided.
- I paid outside Belancer. We can't refund payments made outside Belancer.
Good to know
- No conversion: a BDT payment is refunded in BDT, a USD payment in USD.
- Exact splits: partial refunds are split to the poisha or cent, with nothing lost to rounding.
- Chargebacks: please talk to us before asking your bank to reverse a charge. It's usually faster and keeps your account active.
- Read the refund policy for the full rules.
Tip: Fund one milestone at a time on projects. It keeps any refund small and simple.
Note: Freelancers never have to refund money themselves: everything happens from the held money on Belancer.
Questions and answers
Where does my refund go?
To your Belancer Balance by default, straight away and in the currency you paid. You can ask for your original payment method instead.
How long does a refund to my card, bKash or PayPal take?
Usually several working days, depending on the gateway and your bank or wallet. A refund to your Belancer Balance is immediate.
Do I get the service fee back?
The credit note on your invoice shows exactly what comes back, line by line, including any service fee. The refund policy sets the rules.
Can I get a refund after I approved the work?
Approval releases the money. During the freelancer's Pending period you can still report a problem; after that, contact support.
Is a refund ever paid in another currency?
No. Refunds are always in the currency you paid. Belancer never converts a refund.
Are credits refundable?
Credits have no cash value. Some credit spends are returned as credits, as explained in the credits article.
